Therathanath Ittoop Poonen (1890-1978) hails from the ‘Therathanath’ family in Kottayam. As a boy, he was very studious. He completed his schooling in Kottayam, and continued his education in the Madras Christian College. He was awarded three Gold Medals for academic excellence.

T. I Poonen joined the Union Christian College in 1921 and later he headed the history department of the college. He did extensive research in the area of Portugese and the Dutch days in Kerala and many of his writings were published. He was awarded Doctorate after he relinquished his teaching career at the U. C College.

There are 70 volumes of diaries written by Professor. T. I Poonen. They are written in English and the diaries cover the period from 1921 to 1976. The volumes cover the recordings of his life on a daily basis and also some personal thoughts.
